TRAUMA, GRIEF, LOSS-HEALING THE WOUNDS
August 14, 2008 - Nancy O'Connor, PhD and Virginia Novak, MSW

  • Identify developmental stage where damage due to neglect or abuse first occurred.
  • Determine risk factors for suicide or self-destructive behaviors.
  • Explore acting out behaviors- hurting self or others; including self-mutilation, and sociopathic behaviors (pathological lying, stealing).
  • Explore treatment modalities to heal & recover from trauma and grief – especially from multiple losses.


NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN UNDERSTANDING AND TREATING SELF-INJURY
October 9, 2008 - Barent Walsh, PhD

  • The informal response/with emphasis on the strategic use of language and demeanor in responding initially to self-injury.
  • Crisis intervention as to when self-injury may merit a hospital level of care.
  • Replacement skills training /with emphasis on self-soothing skills such as mindful breathing and visualization.
  • Cognitive-behavioral treatment targeting the automatic thoughts and core beliefs that support self-injury.
  • Exposure treatment for those who have been abused and suffer from body alienation identifies the conditions that are often present when child abuse occurs.


TARGET AUDIENCE: Case managers, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, licensed professional counselors, educators, school personnel, mental health professionals, clinicians, nurses, health and human service practitioners, and other health care professionals.

CREDIT INFORMATION: Charlotte AHEC has approved this activity for continuing Education Units (CEU’s). Participant must attend 100% of seminar for credit. No partial credit will be given. Each program will provide 0.6 CEUs. Charlotte AHEC is an approved provider of the National Board of Certified Counselors and abides by the NBCC Continuing Education Guidelines (Provider #5096). Each program will provide 6.0 contact Hours NBCC. Charlotte AHEC is an approved provider by the North Carolina Psychology Board and designates Contact Hours (category A) for North Carolina Psychologists. Each program will provide 6.0 contact hours (category A) of continuing education for North Carolina Psychologist.
