Volunteer Opportunities (Individual & Group):
Individual Opportunities:
Thompson Child Development Center (1645 Clanton Road, Charlotte NC 28208)

- Enrichment Instructors – Volunteers with special skills – yoga, dance, drama, music, and movement – are needed to teach classes. Monday-Friday, either 9-11 a.m. or 3:30-5 p.m.
- Gardening – Adults and older children with adults are needed to work with our Child Nutrition Director. We need help with weeding, watering and other regular maintenance. Volunteers should have experience in vegetable gardening. The times are flexible and can be done on weekends, weekday mornings or late afternoons. A volunteer profile (one-page) form is needed.
- Front Desk Relief – Adults are needed to greet visitors and answer telephones. Training provided. Volunteers are needed 12-2 p.m. Monday-Friday.
- Nap Time Monitors – Caring adults are needed to monitor children while napping, read to class, escort children to restroom, soothe children back to sleep and more. Volunteers are needed weekdays 12 to 2:30 p.m. Extensive screening is required by early childhood regulation.
Treatment Campus in Matthews (6800 Saint Peter’s Lane Matthews NC 28105)

- Art Instructors – Knowledgeable adults are needed to teach art techniques to small groups of children at our school. Volunteers will need to commit to coming once a week for a semester (September –December or January-May). Sessions will be scheduled for late morning or early afternoon on weekdays. A full volunteer screening with criminal background check is required.
- Front Desk Relief – Adults are needed to greet visitors, answer telephones and complete simple office projects. Training will be provided. Ideal volunteers will customer service skills and telephone experience. Volunteers are needed for one hour lunch relief shifts from 12-1 p.m. and on-call basis on weekdays. This opportunity could be combined with volunteering in the donation room or in the offices. A full volunteer screening with criminal background check is required.
- Library Helpers – 2 adult volunteers are needed on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to assist children with returning and checking out books. Volunteers will also maintain the library – reshelving books, discarding worn out books and general organizing. The check out process is a simple one using index cards. No knowledge of library science needed. Volunteers will have opportunities to interact with all students and school staff. A full volunteer screening with criminal background check is required.
- Music Sharers – Adults who play musical instruments are needed to share their talent. This is a one time or intermittent volunteer opportunity. Volunteers will perform briefly and talk to a small class about their instrument. 30-45 minutes on weekdays, usually late mornings or early afternoons. Screening will be done at the time of volunteering.
- Volunteer Services Assistant – Organized, reliable adult needed to assist the Volunteer Coordinator with clerical and computer projects and to assist with in-kind donations. Ideal volunteers will be available once a week for one morning or afternoon. Volunteers will have opportunities to learn about volunteer management and non-profit administration. A full volunteer screening with criminal background check is required.

Group Volunteer Opportunities
CHAPEL SNACK PROVIDERS
- Matthews Campus (6800 Saint Peter’s Lane, 28105)
- Times: Tuesdays 12:45 -2:15 p.m. or Wednesdays 2:15 to 3:45 p.m.
- 2-4 Adult Volunteers
- Worship alongside residential children and provide snack for 40-45 participants

CLEANING CREWS
- All Locations
- Times: Weekdays, primarily 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- 5-15 Teen and Adult Volunteers
- Clean inside and outside buildings. Tasks include dusting, vacuuming, and washing windows. Thompson will provide the supplies but donations of paper towels are welcome.

FRIDAY HAPPY HOUR
- Matthews Campus (6800 Saint Peter’s Lane, 28105)
- Times: Fridays 3:15-5 p.m.
- 8-15 Adult Volunteers
- Plan and host activities such as crafts, games, field days or carnivals for 28 children, ages 6-13 years old and 14 staff. Groups need to bring their own materials.

MAINTENANCE TEAMS
- All Locations
- Times: Weekdays and occasional Saturdays
- 5 to 25 Youth, Teen or Adult Volunteers
- Outside projects such as cleaning porches, raking mulch, washing windows, spreading pine straw, outside painting, washing cars and seasonal tasks such as raking leaves, power washing or cleaning the pool house. Donations of supplies and materials are always welcome, but not necessary to participate.

PLAYTIME BUDDIES

- Plan and lead a craft project, games or other fun activities for 3 and 4 year olds. Provide the materials for 10 children in a classroom (2 volunteers per classroom)

Can’t Make it to Campus?
We have projects that can travel to your location. Great for busy offices, scout troops, and youth groups. Weekday groups can request a Thompson presentation while working on their project. Projects include:
- Assembling cool down boxes (You supply materials)
- Building our prayer chain
- Creating necklaces or bookmarks for our children (You supply the materials)
- Cutting and Counting Labels for Education
