Early Childhood Outreach Services

Utilizing the Thompson Child Development Center as a best-practices model, Thompson Early Childhood Outreach Services mentors more than 100 early childhood programs by offering: behavior intervention, program quality support, professional trainings, technical assistance, specialized therapy and parent support to early childhood providers, children and families throughout Mecklenburg, Union and Cabarrus counties in North Carolina.

The focus of our Early Childhood Outreach Services is to promote school readiness through social, emotional skill development and assisting centers in creating and sustaining high-quality learning environments.

  • Preschool children are getting expelled at 3 times the rate of kids in K-12 settings due to challenging behaviors*
  • Boys are almost 5 times as likely as girls to be expelled*
  • Research shows that preschool children with appropriate social skills and emotional regulation are better prepared for school, are more likely to succeed, and less likely to get expelled*
  • High quality early childhood programs increase graduation rates by as much as 44%**

  • All services offered free of charge

    For children and families:

    • Child centered behavior intervention
    • Parent support and trainings

    Eligibility criteria for children:

    • Birth to Five years of age
    • Must exhibit challenging behaviors in the classroom to qualify for Behavior Intervention services
    • Must be a resident of Cabarrus County and attend a Cabarrus County Early Childhood program
    • Children attending kindergarten are not eligible
    • Children receiving services through local Children’s Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) are not eligible
    • Children receiving services through school system are not eligible

    For child care centers:

    • Technical assistance for Early Childhood professionals through modeling, coaching and support
    • Professional trainings approved by the Division of Child Development & Early Education (DCDEE)

  • Specialized therapy services covered by Medicaid and some health insurance companies.
    Sliding scale fee offered for those that qualify.
    Behavioral support offered free of charge.

    For children and families:

    • Child centered behavior intervention
    • Specialized therapies (speech, occupational and physical) provided in home or child care center
    • Parent support

    Eligibility criteria for children:

    • Birth to Five years of age
    • Must exhibit challenging behaviors in the classroom to qualify for Behavior Intervention services
    • Must be a resident of Mecklenburg County and attend a Meckleburg County Early Childhood program
    • Children attending kindergarten are not eligible
    • Children eligible to receive specialized therapy services through local Children’s Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) are not eligible
    • Children eligible to receive specialized therapy services through the school system are not eligible

    For child care centers:

    • Technical assistance for Early Childhood professionals through modeling, coaching and support
    • Professional trainings approved by the Division of Child Development & Early Education (DCDEE)

    • Children receiving services through local Children’s Developmental Services Agency (CDSA) are not eligible
    • Children receiving services through school system are not eligible

    For child care centers:

    • Program quality support
    • Technical assistance for Early Childhood professionals through modeling, coaching and support
    • Professional trainings approved by the Division of Child Development & Early Education (DCDEE)

    Eligibility criteria for child care centers: (must meet one of the following criteria)

    • Centers must have NC PreK Classroom(s)
    • Infant-Toddler Classrooms in 4 and 5 Star licensed centers
