Employee Engagement Report Highlights Commitment to our Mission

Employee engagement is the level of commitment, passion, and loyalty our team members feel toward Thompson and our organizational goals. Engagement matters, because committed employees are more effective, more productive, and highly motivated to deliver quality services that lead to positive outcomes for children and families.

In July of 2024, Thompson conducted an Employee Engagement Survey to better understand what our team members need to thrive and how we can help our employees achieve personal growth at work while changing lives and making a difference.

Here are some of the key results.

9 of 11 business units report engagement of 94% or better

With an overall employee engagement of 91%, workers at Thompson by and large expressed that:

  • Their basic work needs were met
  • They were given an opportunity to contribute
  • They feel a sense of belonging
  • They are provided a clear pathway to learn

These foundations are important as they represent the building blocks of trust and support that enable leaders and employees to find satisfaction in their work and attain personal growth.

Success from top to bottom of the engagement framework

The following graph highlights Thompson’s ability to deliver positive engagement at every level. Similar to the hierarchy of needs, workplace engagement starts with resources and environment and then advances through more complex requirements, such as feeling your efforts matter, building camaraderie with your colleagues, and becoming a better person.

Pyramid Chart

Big wins

Out of the 11 questions asked in the survey, certain topics showed higher rates of engagement than others. The following six criteria received a “yes” response from 91% or more employees:

  • Does your supervisor, or someone at work, seem to care about you as a person?
  • Do you have the materials and equipment to do your work right?
  • Does the mission/purpose of your company make you feel your job is important?
  • Is there someone at work who encourages your development?
  • In the last year, have you had opportunities to learn and grow?
  • Do you know what is expected of you at work?

Compared to previous surveys, Thompson saw agency wide increases of +3% in employees believing their opinions count, +4% in having someone at work who encourages their development, +6% in opportunities to learn and grow, and +8% in having someone at work talk to them about their progress.

Areas for improvement

Thompson is happy to report that our two lowest categories for employee engagement came in at 83%, but compared to the other criteria where we scored higher, we have identified two key opportunities for improvement:

  • More recognition and praise for doing good work
  • More opportunity for employees to spend more time each day doing what they do best

An engaged leadership team is effective leadership team

Given that Thompson invests heavily in leadership training and development, it’s no surprise that 95% of our leaders are fully engaged in their role – a great sign both for our individual contributors and the children and families we serve.
