Every February, Family Support Awareness Month reminds us of something child- and family-serving professionals know well: strong families thrive when they have the right resources and guidance, not when systems wait for problems to get worse.
At Thompson, our mission is simple: serve children and families through healing, teaching, worship and play. We believe:
“Most families don’t need to be fixed — they need to be supported.”
When caregivers have the right tools and resources, children are safer, families stay together and communities grow stronger.
Family Support in Action
Fanis came to Thompson for the same reason many parents do: she wanted stability and opportunity for her children. After leaving an abusive relationship, she was starting over with limited resources while navigating employment and immigration challenges.
Through Thompson’s family support services, Fanis enrolled in evidence-based parenting classes and joined a parent support group. For the first time, she was surrounded by other caregivers who understood what she was carrying. Thompson also connected her with a community partner who helped furnish her home.
When she saw her once-empty home transformed into a warm, welcoming space for her children, Fanis was overwhelmed. She hugged her support team, sent photos and shared how proud she felt; not just of the home, but of herself.
This is what effective family support looks like.
Prevention Isn’t Passive. It’s Intentional.
Jennifer’s journey looked different. She joined Thompson’s parenting program unsure that it would help. She showed up because she felt she had to, not because she believed it would change anything.
Through the Incredible Years® parenting program, Jennifer learned practical strategies for managing behavior and strengthening her relationship with her children —tools she could use immediately at home.
Halfway through the program, Jennifer considered leaving. After a supportive conversation that respected her choice, she decided to continue. Weeks later, she shared a breakthrough: a calm, successful interaction at home using what she had learned. Household tension eased, and her confidence grew.
This is why prevention matters. Families who receive timely guidance are far less likely to re-enter the child welfare system; not because they were forced to change, but because they were given the chance to succeed.
Strong Families Thrive with Support
Stories like Fanis’s and Jennifer’s show what’s possible when families are met early, without judgment and given practical tools and encouragement. Thompson partners with caregivers, community organizations and child welfare systems to help families stay strong, together.
When families are supported, children don’t just get through hard moments — they grow, feel safe and build trust that carries forward. Strong families don’t need fixing; they need support and a community willing to show up.
