Thompson Placement Stability Unit (TPSU) helped Leo develop healthier coping mechanisms

Leo loves mechanics and is currently taking a mechanical engineering course. Leo is 17 years old and has spent most of his teenage years in and out of foster care. He has a history of substance abuse, after being introduced to illegal substances by his father at age 12. He saw his family ripped apart by substance use and constant DSS involvement. Leo experienced a significant amount of trauma and struggles with not seeing his younger siblings (who have been adopted) and his infant son due to his substance use.

Due to Leo’s trust issues and substance use he struggled to find a stable foster placement, and was referred to Thompson’s Placement Stability Unit (TPSU). Our Youth Care Specialists provide Leo with a safe and nonjudgmental space to share his thoughts and emotions to work through his trauma and substance use. Through counseling and therapeutic strategies, Leo developed healthier coping mechanisms and strategies for relapse prevention, is rebuilding his self-esteem and self-worth, helping him regain his confidence and sense of purpose.

‘By being authentic we build real connections based on mutual trust and respect. Then the healing can begin.’ ~ Leo’s Youth Care Specialist
