Friends of the Children 2Gen model brings Shelbie’s family much needed support

Like most mothers, Shelbie wants the best for her children. She was excited for them to be part of the Friends of the Children – Charlotte program as she could see the long-term benefits. Life had never been easy, but the pandemic took things in a downward spiral and the family struggled with lack of food, transportation, and access to public health benefits. Shelbie has vision issues and has a bipolar disorder diagnosis, but does not have insurance to seek medical help. DSS was called due to suspicion of neglect as her children were at school in dirty clothes and disheveled.

Shelbie’s ‘Friend’ helped to get the kids new uniforms, and as part of the new 2Gen approach, a referral to Loaves and Fishes was made to help with food. We also signed Shelbie up for a free vision exam and glasses through “Vision to Learn”. Transportation was secured with her stimulus check and we helped fill out her Medicaid paperwork. A chore chart was also established to get the children helping in the home.

”It was so satisfying to be able to help this family get access to resources they didn’t know were available.” – FOTC Family Partner.
