Friends of the Children help Elijah thrive

Elijah is very civic minded and dreams of becoming a firefighter or a police officer. He gets excited driving past a fire station and seeing firetrucks out on a call. Elijah was born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome as his mother used drugs while pregnant. He has other diagnoses that make it difficult to focus and hard to understand numbers & math. He often struggles to communicate appropriately when frustrated or angry, and usually results in inappropriate, defiant and aggressive behaviors.

Elijah is part of the Friends of the Children – Charlotte program and identifying the right resources to help him has been challenging. He receives several mental health services and is currently completing psychiatric therapy. With the help of his Friend and therapists, his adoptive parents recently moved him to a smaller school specifically for children with behavioral challenges. In the short time since his move, Elijah increased his confidence and shows significant improvements in his behavior and academics.

‘Elijah is already thriving at his new school – he has gone from daily referrals and behavior incidents to barely one a week’ ~ Elijah’s Friend
