Friends of the Children helped Xander focus and grow

Xander just started playing football and it has been an instant hit. He loves playing and is often heard uplifting his teammates during games sharing words of encouragement. Xander struggled academically and is below grade level in reading but started to show tremendous growth, gaining confidence in his reading as his fluency increased. Xander is the middle child of three and lives with his mother, his father is not involved in his life. Finding a stable job has been difficult for his mother making it a constant struggle to support her family.

Xander has been enrolled in our Friends of the Children-Charlotte program for a few years and is really beginning to see the benefits. Having a stable, male role-model helped him build a more positive outlook on life. The 2-Gen approach of the program provided Xander’s mom with job resources, resulting in her finding stable work and better able to support her family. The social events provide a positive environment and support for the entire family. Xander’s growth mindset led to him helping in his uncle’s business over the summer and learning new skills.

Seeing Xander work toward his own goals and be goal oriented has inspired me as a mentor.’ ~ Xander’s Friend
