Mrs. Walker finds the parenting skills and support she needs as her great-granddaughter’s caregiver

Mrs. Walker is the primary caregiver to her 8-yr. old great-granddaughter, due to her daughter and granddaughter’s mental health conditions. Mrs. Walker originally joined the Wisdom- Grandparent Circle of Parents® when her great-granddaughter was younger as the family’s mental health struggles often caused her stress and anxiety over what is best for her great granddaughter. Since joining the program, she has benefited from new friendships and perspectives, and gained new parenting skills.

Due to her great-granddaughter’s age, it was necessary Mrs. Walker move into the school-age support group. She was hesitant to leave behind the friends she made, but our Family Education Specialist supported her transition step-by-step. Mrs. Walker has already been able to make connections and find supports in the new group. She quickly saw that the experiences and topics were more age and developmentally relevant to her great-granddaughter’s current and future needs.

‘These groups have made me a better caregiver with new skills and connections, but also because they remind me to also take care of myself ‘ Mrs. Walker.
