Once Julia’s Foster Parents understood the ‘why’ behind her outbursts they were better equipped to help her

Julia loves unicorns, rainbows and playing outside like most 4 year old children. Julia and her younger brother recently entered foster care. Julia struggled to settle at daycare and her parents regularly receive calls about Julia’s behavior. Things became so bad that her foster parents, overwhelmed and experiencing compassion fatigue, called Thompson requesting a new placement for Julia. Our team jumped into action to understand the situation, salvage the placement, and prevent separating Julia from her brother.

After talking directly with Julia, it was discovered how much she loves her foster parents but she didn’t love her daycare. During a meeting with the foster family Julia’s journey over the previous 7 months was discussed. Her foster parents soon realized it was her first time in foster care – not knowing when or if she will return home. She found out her ‘dad’ isn’t her biological dad and then met her real father – who seemed like a stranger. These uncertainties and stressors helped her foster parents understand the ‘why’ behind Julia’s behaviors. They agreed to not disrupt her placement as it would only create further trauma.

‘Once we stopped and looked back, we realized that what Julia was dealing with was bigger than her outbursts at daycare.’ ~ Julia’s Foster Parents
