Friends of the Children – Charlotte is helping Rico improve his self-esteem

Rico loves to play basketball and other sports and aspires to be a musical artist. Rico struggles academically and socially at school. He frequently blurts out answers in class, usually getting the answer wrong but uses it to bring attention to himself. He struggles with self-confidence and masks this with self-deprecating humor. Rico lives with his father and brother and sees his mother during special occasions. The family manages to meet their basic needs, but struggles to support Rico academically and socially.

Rico is part of the Friends of the Children – Charlotte program which provides him with the opportunity to socialize with peers from diverse backgrounds and build a sense of belonging. His ‘Friend’ is working with him to improve his academics, and Rico now attends tutoring three times a week. His ‘Friend’ built trust and a positive communication channel between the school and Rico’s father. Rico makes consistent efforts now to learn independently, and works toward catching up with his peers. Having goals and consistent support helps Rico’s self-esteem and social skills.

‘Having support and guidance on how we can work with the school to help Rico has lifted a huge worry and burden.’ ~ Rico’s father.
